By using the two pieces to breed the animals, you can get up to three steaks and two leather. Bread heals 2.5 food hearts (Is that the term for them?) while cooked steak gives you 4 food hearts. For example, let's say you have two cows and three pieces of wheat. Most wheat should go towards breeding animals. Here's something important though: Bread should not be your primary food source. Wheat farms and animal pens are great for food. There should be absolutely zero places for mobs to spawn in your home, because that defeats the whole point of a house's safety. The most important thing for houses though is torches. Having a mine can be an advantage, but we'll talk more about that later. Beds are great as they allow you to skip the night, thus preventing most mob spawns. Storage rooms, furnace rooms and crafting tables are obvious necessities. You should be able to see all sides of your house from the first floor to prevent a certain someone from sssssssssssneaking up on you. First off, more than one exit should exist, so that one doorway blocked by creepers doesn't mean you'll have to risk fighting them. Some specific things are required to truly make it "safe". Your main base should be the safest place in your whole world. My advice: Depending on the size of the island in question, they can be a very good option for survival.Īlright, that's a good basis on where to build, but what should you build? There are several types of buildings that are absolutely necessary for long-term survival. There is also the slim chance of drowning, if you're being reckless. The only problem is resources can sometimes run low on islands, depending on the number of trees. The surrounding ocean means less monsters will spawn as well. They are typically quite small, making them easily defensible. The islands that dot the vast oceans have their own appeal. My advice: Snow biomes may be your best option. Also, as an added bonus, they're quite scenic. Forests are typically nearby in case wood is required and snow golems can be created to defend yourself. The open areas of most of them give the visibility of plains and desert, as well as the grass to allow for animal spawns. Large snow biomes are probably the best place to live. My advice: Deserts and Plains are great choices to live in. The advantage of plains though, is that animals can spawn, allowing for animal farms to be built more easily with less travel. Since there are no trees and only the occasional hill, it is very easy to make sure it's safe outside before you leave your home. Deserts and plains are both, wide, flat open areas where visibility of terrain is quite good. I'm grouping these into one category because they are quite similar. On a side note, swamps should be avoided for all these same reasons. It will be difficult to make sure an area is safe when you can't be sure if something is lurking out of sight. Enemies can spawn on top of trees and drop down from above. The downside is that the trees can obstruct vision and cause dark spots. The upside to forests is you may never need a tree farm seeing as wood resources are plentiful. So here's a simplified list of biomes and their usefulness to survival. Sure, the overhanging cliff that gives a nice view of the ocean is a good place to build in normal survival, but this is HARDCORE. Once you spawn in and are looking for a place to build your main base, aesthetics should not be the first thing on your mind.
